Becoming a Freight Broker vs Freight Agent
Unlike freight brokers, agents do not operate under their own authority. They work under the license and oversight of a freight broker, helping them to win new clients, arrange shipments, and manage their operations.
There are various benefits to being a freight agent vs. a broker and vice versa. Many professionals start as freight agents as an entry into the industry and pursue their brokerage licenses later on. Others remain freight agents for the entirety of their careers. The choice is personal and one is not better than the other.
While both freight agents and brokers facilitate the transportation of goods, their scope of operation differs.
- Freight brokers hold the necessary licenses and bonds to take on greater liability. Additionally, they are trained to handle operational tasks like compliance, invoicing, and payment to carriers.
- Freight broker agents are the sales force and growth side of a freight brokerage. They are tasked with building and maintaining a shipper customer base. Their day-to-day responsibilities include identifying potential clients, negotiating contracts, and ensuring that shipments are handled efficiently.
- Freight agents typically focus on client acquisition and maintain customer relationships. They work under the umbrella of brokers by leveraging their infrastructure and authority to conduct business.
- Starting as a freight agent can be a good place to start for those new to transportation and logistics. Reduced start-up costs enable agents to focus on developing the needed skills in negotiations, customer service, marketing, client development. and freight management. Agents also do not have to put out the financial resources to obtain a freight brokers license.
Our freight broker agent training program will teach you all the skills you need to earn and excel in these positions. We will pair you with a licensed broker; you’ll work under their credentials to build up your experience. This gets you operating right away, and it opens doors for additional work as an independent broker in the future.
